UK and US Shoe Sizes: How to Find the Right Size

The short answer: to find the right size, measure the length of your foot in centimetres and look it up in the chart: each range matches one size (half sizes are in the full charts). In the Saxone chart a men's 42 is a UK 8 and a US 9; a women's 37 is a UK 4 and a US 6½. Fit can vary slightly from one style to another: if you are between two sizes, write to us before you order.

How do you convert UK and US shoe sizes?

Scales differ from country to country: the UK and the US use lower numbers than European sizes. The chart lines up the Saxone size, UK, US and the length of the foot, so there is no mental arithmetic.

Half sizes (for example 42½, UK 8½) are in the full charts: men's size guide and women's size guide, which also give measurements in inches.

What UK size is a 42? And a 40?

In the Saxone men's chart a 42 is a UK 8 and a US 9, and a 40 is a UK 6 and a US 7. For women a 40 is a UK 7 and a US 9½. Scales can differ slightly between brands: when buying online, the length of your foot matters more than the size you usually take.

How do you measure your foot?

1. Place your foot on a sheet of paper, with the heel against a wall.
2. Mark the tip of your longest toe.
3. Measure the distance from the wall to the mark, in centimetres.
4. Repeat with the other foot and keep the longer measurement: feet are never identical.

It is better to measure in the evening, when the foot is a little swollen. Then find your value in the chart: the measurement falls within one range, and that is your size. For example, 26.5 cm falls between 26.4 and 26.6: you are a 42. If your measurement falls between two ranges, you need a half size, which you will find in the full charts.

What if you are between two sizes?

Shapes and constructions differ from one style to another, so the same size can fit a little differently. If you are between two sizes, or your foot is wide or narrow, write to us before you order and we will help you choose.

If the size is not right, you can exchange it free of charge within 14 days of delivery: we book the GLS pickup and send you the new size of the same style. The free exchange applies to shoes in stock, not to pre-orders.

A Goodyear welted shoe is stiffer than a Blake shoe for the first few days (see our Goodyear welted collection): do not mistake early stiffness for the wrong size.

Does the fit change between styles?
